Though it would be impossible to distill the rich history of animation into just a few works, the small selection here consists of films often cited by critics, historians, and audiences as being among the best the genre has to offer. These films show the stunning beauty of animation, the passion and artistry that go into it, and the gravity it can bring to telling so many different kinds of stories.
Pinocchio (1940)
Among the many classics of the Golden Age, Disney's Pinocchio is held in particular esteem. Critics and film historians praise it for its technical mastery, ambitious visuals, and emotional narrative. It is considered one of, if not the greatest example of the heights animation can reach as an artform.
Hedgehog in the Fog (1975)
In contrast with the bright and energetic traditions of American cartoons, Soyuzmultfilm's Hedgehog in the Fog embodies a subtler, more delicate nature seen in Soviet animated films of the era. The film's eerie atmosphere and contemplative depiction of childlike fear and wonder has captivated generations of animation fans, in Russia and abroad. Famed Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki has cited it as his favorite film.
Akira (1988)
Based on the popular manga series of the same name, Akira was a cultural phenomenon. It inspired awe upon release with its intense action, detailed animation, and harrowing depiction of the destruction of a futuristic Tokyo which special effects of the time could not hope to match. The iconic cyberpunk film is also notable for introducting Japanese animation to American audiences, leading to the eventual popularization of anime in the West.
The Thief and the Cobbler (1993)
The Thief and the Cobbler, passion project of master animator Richard Willams, suffered many setbacks over its staggering 29 year production history. Despite this, those decades were not wasted; the movie contains some of the most fluid and painstakingly animated action ever put to film. Several versions were released to varying levels of reception, with perhaps the most definitive edition being the 2013 fan-made "Recobbled Cut" which edits together fully animated as well as unfinished footage to most closely replicate the artists' original intent.
Toy Story (1995)
Considered a landmark work in the genre, Toy Story revolutionzed animation as the first fully CGI animated feature film. With its resonant storytelling and innovative visuals it marked the beginning of a new era for animation and brought Pixar to the forefront of the industry.
